Why horror?

There are countless dissertations on the psychology of people who write, read, view, horror. Today I'm not delving into why we write it. Today I'd like to ask why YOU like horror, and what kind.

I will list some of the obvious reasons, however, if not pen an entire essay:

The adrenaline rush sans actual harm.

A desire to 'study' the dark side of human nature, again from a safe place.

Morbid curiosity (to put it in general terms).

It's strangely seductive in its ways, particularly certain themes.

It reflects what a society is going through/feeling, at a given time.

It reflects how you feel about the dark and meaningless existence of humanity. (Hi old school Goths. ;-)

You just think it's fun, and you like to see what happens next.

These are  few off the top of my head.  Now; why do YOU like horror? What is it that's so appealing? And do you have favorite themes? (Apocalypse, humans surviving against all odds, monsters, etc.)
