For R

Posted by Sherry Roit on Wednesday, February 17, 2016, In : Writing

I don't know all the reasons I am
who I am

I only know I'm human and do the
best I can

Certainly, I've not meant to make you
feel less-than

If I had, believe you me, there'd be
no question

Is an apology worth the words if I'm
not sure why

Something I have never wanted is for life to
be a lie

So just know, from the bottom and middle
of my heart

I thank you for the patience you've shown me
from the start

Know that I love you more than any
words will tell

And that a world without you would be my
version of hell....

In the moment.

Sitting in the sun on 'our' bench letting thoughts stream. I wonder if I can come up with a blog post. I wonder if I can let go of some things and just be. Be free to feel. Oh, I feel, but to feel all the time without the baggage of thoughts -- specifically doubts!

Is feeling all the time too much? I don't really think so. It's the conditions we place on the feeling that fuck us up. Thinking too hard.

Does everything happen for a reason, is there a reason for everything? In the most literal sen...

You are what you write. Sort of.

Posted by Sherry Roit on Monday, April 20, 2015, In : General

A quick post with a few thoughts...

Are writers present in their characters?

Of course they are. Even the authors who say they aren't. Even in the nastiest, most-opposite-of-you character. The reason is simple: they are written through our filter of the world. Our POV.  Some characters have more of us in them than others, and I'm sure you can have many discussions on all of the reasons.

Are writers present in their narratives?

Well of course. Even in non-fiction, no matter how unbiased, once aga...

Ch-ch-ch-changes.

Posted by Sherry Roit on Thursday, July 17, 2014, In : Writing

I debated mentioning this yet, but it would seem I am going ahead with a few things I've been mulling over. Not only that, it's been some time since I updated, I know.

So some news, all wrapped up in one tidy blog post;

Anatomy of Darkness is to have a European release, no doubt with new cover, February-ish. If this changes, I shall inform you all.

Paris Immortal, the series, is coming back home to me. In other words, I believe I will be obtaining all the rights to it very soon. This will likely...

What running taught me about writing

Posted by Sherry Roit on Wednesday, July 24, 2013, In : Writing

You might not want to, but you'll probably feel better if you do.

Unused muscles atrophy.

You just may be better at it than you give yourself credit for.

Self doubt is defeating.

Sometimes you gotta push through that shit - or at least hang on til the end.

If you hurt yourself, it's not an excuse to quit. You still gotta stretch, or something, man, unless it's dire.

If it's dire, it's okay to give yourself a break.

It's okay to be proud of your accomplishments. Just don't be an annoying braggart.

Long form, short form

Posted by Sherry Roit on Tuesday, June 25, 2013, In : Writing

Never say never. I know. How cliche. But so often true. Just as stereotypes exist for a reason, I suspect so too, do many cliches.

I've always admired anyone who could write a short story that packed a punch. Stephen King, Neil Gaiman - those are some famous short story writers. I also admired anyone who could make me feel as if a 200 (or less)  page novel had just packed wallop, had contained more story than seemed possible, in some way.

But more than the wallop, there was a very important in...

A confession

Posted by Sherry Roit on Tuesday, February 19, 2013, In : Writing

Well. Hello there. So... I have a confession. I know some of your are chomping at the bit for PI5. And I've made some updates that I'm almost halfway through, that I know where it's going. Thought it's been a while since I mentioned it, yes? And now I have this OTHER book come out. Where is the last Paris Immortal, you wonder.

Well. I thought I knew where it was going. I kind of still do, somewhere in the back of my head. And then other things needed to get out, be completed. Now I have this ...

When calling it quits is okay

Posted by Sherry Roit on Thursday, January 19, 2012,

Quit, you say? NEVER you say.

We grow up hearing that winners never quit and quitters never win. Some of us may even grow up feeling that quitting is akin to breaking a promise. That it makes one a complete failure.

I am not suggesting that winners quit-- or am I? They may have quit something in their lives. I'm sure they did.

Never mind the obvious examples. (To quit smoking, is a WIN.)

We're not talking about that today. I'm talking about recognizing that perhaps whatever it is you're trying t...

Long time...

Posted by Sherry Roit on Saturday, June 18, 2011,

Oh my. It's been a while since I posted a blog. I'm not so good at them, any more. A reason I no longer have livejournal. I need to store up new things to say, before blogging them. Some will say that authors (or indeed anyone with a need for promotion, perhaps) should get themselves out there all the time, in every way, especially blogs. But what if you have nothing to say? Does it do me any favors to repeat myself, and/or write about inane crap that no one really wants to read?

I think not....

Life, writing and not worrying.

Posted by Sherry Roit on Thursday, February 3, 2011, In : General

Here I sit at the day job, typing on my shiny baby, Sezzy Eddie. I've done some good writing since adopting Eddie. Some in a coffee shop-- oh so cliche but effective-- and some at home. I've also done a lot of not writing and I'm not sorry, nor am I worried. Why? Because I've been out living life, exploring this state (and the one south) that I live in. I have wanderlust, dear readers, and it must be satisfied. Until the day I can make it to Europe, this is a close second, exploring the coas...

My, I can be a moody bitch. This, of course, isn't a newsflash. Not for myself, anyway. It might be for you. It's been a wonderful Fall here, and certainly there have been some high points, but...

Well, first up: You writers out there, have you ever— after going through an endless lists of reasons why you're not writing— come to the conclusion that you're not writing, because you just don't want to any more? Maybe you done wrote all the words you ever felt like writing, and now...screw it?...

Fall Inspiration

Posted by Sherry Roit on Thursday, September 23, 2010, In : Writing

Autumn, autumn, how I love thee. In Seattle it can't rival the East coast, or even the Missouri and Iowa autumns that I recall. I just hope each year that I'll have some semblance of a real Fall. The crisp air, the crunching (instead of always soggy) leaves. The fog. The clearing during the day, temps in the 60s, air crisp and clean.

Well, so far, I've had my wish this year. (And I've discovered the joys of certain squashes.) It makes for fantastic morning runs, and those morning runs also ser...

Wow, I actually finished it. Spent most of today doing this, in fact. It's a good thing I'm free until Friday. I was going to make another trip to the coast, but circumstances currently beyond my control, prevented it. That's all right, because the apartment can do with a cleaning tomorrow, novels need words added to them, and I can use the chill-out time. The weather is perfect for this sort of staycation, anyway. Overcast, misty. Dracula weather.

Mmm, Dracula weather. I raise my mug of hot...
