The power of words.

Words have meaning.

Tell a child he's stupid and twenty, thirty, forty years later, he still believes it. Says it of himself on a daily basis.

Words carry weight.

Tell a girl she was a chubby kid, and years later, in the far stages of her anorexia, she still sees it.

Words. Mean. Something.

Fat, lazy, ugly, slow, weirdo, abnormal, crazy...

Even the most innocuous seeming phrase, not meant to harm, can cause harm: "Don't cry. It's not that bad." 

Dismissive of a person's feelings, intentional or not....
