guardian at the gate

Posted by Sherry Roit on Tuesday, January 10, 2017, In : Personal

My trips south into the Oregon coast always, without fail, have one thing in common.

I must stop at North Head lighthouse, even if only for five minutes, before crossing into Oregon.

It's become a symbol. A ritual. A superstition. I must pay my respects to the keeper of the gate -- the lighthouse that is the guardian of my portal into another realm. My happy happy place, my therapy. My rejuvenation. My ZEN.

I'm certain it began to stick in my head originally, as it was the first bonafide on-a-c...

loving fiercely

-blows off dust-

Love fiercely.
LOVE.
FIERCELY.

It's scary. It's difficult, because your brain gets in the way with all of those "what ifs." It signals a certain loss of control, at least in bursts.

You do it for fandoms, without thought. Why not people? Life?

Some won't understand you. They'll call it obsession. Is that so--

You know, I was about to write how obsession isn't what I'm talking about, but fuck that. Be obsessed with life. A thing. A person. A color. Whatever.

Sometimes it hurts. Often,...

Negative naggies

Posted by Sherry Roit on Wednesday, November 5, 2014, In : Personal

Yes, I just made that up: naggies. It suits them well. I'm not speaking of other people, but our own thoughts. Our own little voice that we are told to listen to. But sometimes not. Because sometimes it's a damned negative, nagging, nincompoop. It leaves behind these ninja bombs sometimes, too. The ones you don't immediately notice, not until later when BOOM, they go off in a cloud of blackness.

Now, I'm not saying to ignore your gut instincts. I don't necessarily think our guts use that littl...

You're workin' my tit! (Can you dig it?)

No, this is not porn. That's slang, for gettin' on my last nerve, and such. Dang, but some days people wear me out.

So let's go over a few things because I feel like it, and I need to get it out of my system, and also - surely some of you will be nodding along with this. This is for you, too. Now, some of this applies more to the net. But some applies to both offline and online. The net just seems to amplify bad behavior.

Nostalgia and stasis

Posted by Sherry Roit on Thursday, May 3, 2012,

I'm going back home to Missouri (round the Ozarks) in mid June, to see my parents. It is their 50th wedding anniversary, and that's amazing to me. They were high school sweet hearts.

This may seem strange to say, but I'm more excited about going than I would expect. Not because I don't love my parents and want to see them. I find I'm craving that simplicity of life, that slower pace, and I know damned well some of it can't truly be recaptured; you know, that time of innocence when you were a c...

Life, writing and not worrying.

Posted by Sherry Roit on Thursday, February 3, 2011, In : General

Here I sit at the day job, typing on my shiny baby, Sezzy Eddie. I've done some good writing since adopting Eddie. Some in a coffee shop-- oh so cliche but effective-- and some at home. I've also done a lot of not writing and I'm not sorry, nor am I worried. Why? Because I've been out living life, exploring this state (and the one south) that I live in. I have wanderlust, dear readers, and it must be satisfied. Until the day I can make it to Europe, this is a close second, exploring the coas...

A shiny new year.

Posted by Sherry Roit on Wednesday, January 5, 2011, In : General

Did you make resolutions? Did you see in 2011 with enthusiasm, say good riddance to 2010? Or were you sad to see the old year go?

I've been hearing people say good riddance to 2010, that it was a bad year. Well, first off, that's hardly fair to poor 2010. It's not the year's fault, after all. Also, I think it's something that's said every year. Because-- no kidding, eh?-- everyone has bad years, and they don't all coincide. But sometimes I think it's become the default thing to say. As if hav...

It's always someone else.

I'm sitting here drinking tea, thinking about an event that happened about two weeks ago. (And cursing my computer, but that's another story.)

I committed a random act of compassion about two weeks ago. Perhaps saved a life, if I want to be lofty. Definitely did the sensible thing.

That's it right there: sensible.

I've been trying to come up with a word for what I witnessed, that is, one of the illnesses that plagues society, but I've not had success, yet. There just isn't one word to sum it up...
