Open letter aka ENOUGH

Dear "from my cold dead hands,"

The issue is not mental health OR culture of violence OR guns. The word you seek is AND. This country is not evolved enough to handle these grown up weapons of death. I will gladly, as the daughter of a one time cop who had a gun collection, and as a person from areas where hunting is done for food, give up my right to arms to save the lives of these babies - they are BABIES - that are being massacred. I will do this because I am not a selfish bitch lacking compassion who thinks my right supersedes their right to be safe in schools and theaters. KINDERGARTEN. Also, it's because I know the facts, not the rhetoric, when it comes to guns and the stats concerning them. Just fess up, my fellow Americans; we cannot play nice, and so should have our toys taken away. I concede that the gun didn't make these people kill others. We all know this, we're not stupid. We don't believe the guns are whispering foul things in the ears of innocent bystanders. But how can you, with a straight face, tell me they don't HELP. Until we can work on our issues that cause these tragedies, and find some way to ease them, to fix them, we should not give out guns. Don't even pretend you're going to use them against the government, or that you'll become some white horse savior. The stats on that are not in your favor. I shall leave you with this anecdotal evidence; an ex, while drunk, held a loaded gun to my head. Do I wish I'd had a gun, too? No. Why? Because I'd be dead. Maybe we'd both be dead. Rather than escalate the situation, I talked him down from it, got the gun, and unloaded it.

I'm alive to write this letter, dear "from my cold dead hands." Now stop pretending guns don't greatly aid in killing people. Grow up, own up, and think of someone other than yourself and the imaginary bad guy you're going to gun down to save the world.

Sincerely,

Never-felt-a-need-to-have-a-gun-in-my-home
