it isn't a place

Posted by Sherry Roit on Friday, August 11, 2017, In : Writing

Wisps of clouds streaking the blue I gaze upon. Sun’s reflection on the water.
It’s yellow diamond.
Sail boats skim by in many directions and gulls whine. Swallows chatter while liquid laps at rocks, docks and shore.
A dog sets a ball at my feet. I throw it. He is happy. I smile.
Children laugh in the distance.
There are scents; some are salt, smoke, dirt, air and food. People.

Yet I am removed from it all, even as I spy couples talking and holding hands.

A trip through a residential ...

It's a scent
           a sigh
A caught breath when finger brushes thigh

The very thought of you
  sound of you
  sight of you

You're an idea
A constant presence
You're an ache never cured
  a longing
  an itch

Scratch Scratch
leaving trenches
Still not satiated, just left bloody

It's maddening
    you're madness
Madness

...sanity's overrated.

For R

Posted by Sherry Roit on Wednesday, February 17, 2016, In : Writing

I don't know all the reasons I am
who I am

I only know I'm human and do the
best I can

Certainly, I've not meant to make you
feel less-than

If I had, believe you me, there'd be
no question

Is an apology worth the words if I'm
not sure why

Something I have never wanted is for life to
be a lie

So just know, from the bottom and middle
of my heart

I thank you for the patience you've shown me
from the start

Know that I love you more than any
words will tell

And that a world without you would be my
version of hell....

Ch-ch-ch-changes.

I debated mentioning this yet, but it would seem I am going ahead with a few things I've been mulling over. Not only that, it's been some time since I updated, I know.

So some news, all wrapped up in one tidy blog post;

Anatomy of Darkness is to have a European release, no doubt with new cover, February-ish. If this changes, I shall inform you all.

Paris Immortal, the series, is coming back home to me. In other words, I believe I will be obtaining all the rights to it very soon. This will likely...

Brain dump (aka Keys to the Kingdom)

Posted by Sherry Roit on Thursday, May 8, 2014, In : Writing

I'm sitting here, mind wandering as it often does- particularly when I've decided I need to be doing something- and it got stuck on a loop of what it means to be a creative person. The frustrations we must all have in common.

Such as this issue: what is in your head is not what always comes out through your fingers. It's never quite this enough, that enough, ___ enough. Even when other people say it's great, part of you always thinks well, thanks but if only...

Of course you really shouldn't sa...

BETWEEN (flash fiction)

Posted by Sherry Roit on Friday, October 25, 2013, In : Writing

Between seven and nine, four days per week. Tuesday through Friday. In a too-bright-to-be-missed atomic pink running skirt. Unless it was autumn/winter, and quite chilly. Then the muscular legs were swathed in charcoal grey to the ankles.

He looked forward to those mornings. Stood on his balcony, perched there high above in his nest. Sipping coffee. Waiting. He'd watch for her. Sometimes she came from the south. Most times. Rarely from the north. He wondered at that anomaly. If there were some...

What running taught me about writing

Posted by Sherry Roit on Wednesday, July 24, 2013, In : Writing

You might not want to, but you'll probably feel better if you do.

Unused muscles atrophy.

You just may be better at it than you give yourself credit for.

Self doubt is defeating.

Sometimes you gotta push through that shit - or at least hang on til the end.

If you hurt yourself, it's not an excuse to quit. You still gotta stretch, or something, man, unless it's dire.

If it's dire, it's okay to give yourself a break.

It's okay to be proud of your accomplishments. Just don't be an annoying braggart.

Long form, short form

Posted by Sherry Roit on Tuesday, June 25, 2013, In : Writing

Never say never. I know. How cliche. But so often true. Just as stereotypes exist for a reason, I suspect so too, do many cliches.

I've always admired anyone who could write a short story that packed a punch. Stephen King, Neil Gaiman - those are some famous short story writers. I also admired anyone who could make me feel as if a 200 (or less)  page novel had just packed wallop, had contained more story than seemed possible, in some way.

But more than the wallop, there was a very important in...

A confession

Posted by Sherry Roit on Tuesday, February 19, 2013, In : Writing

Well. Hello there. So... I have a confession. I know some of your are chomping at the bit for PI5. And I've made some updates that I'm almost halfway through, that I know where it's going. Thought it's been a while since I mentioned it, yes? And now I have this OTHER book come out. Where is the last Paris Immortal, you wonder.

Well. I thought I knew where it was going. I kind of still do, somewhere in the back of my head. And then other things needed to get out, be completed. Now I have this ...

What's technique? SOC

Posted by Sherry Roit on Thursday, September 6, 2012, In : Writing

How dare I speak of technique. Clearly, I don't have one. I'm not even a consistent blogger.

Tell me, is it better to have a set structure, a schedule; better to have an ever shifting open ended affair? Or something in between?

I don't know. You are you, I am me, and we don't fit into the same box. Therefore, I'm not actually speaking about technique.

But then again...

Where is the point that you realize whatever you're doing isn't working, and that perhaps you should try something else? I susp...

Fall Inspiration

Posted by Sherry Roit on Thursday, September 23, 2010, In : Writing

Autumn, autumn, how I love thee. In Seattle it can't rival the East coast, or even the Missouri and Iowa autumns that I recall. I just hope each year that I'll have some semblance of a real Fall. The crisp air, the crunching (instead of always soggy) leaves. The fog. The clearing during the day, temps in the 60s, air crisp and clean.

Well, so far, I've had my wish this year. (And I've discovered the joys of certain squashes.) It makes for fantastic morning runs, and those morning runs also ser...

Word-gasm!

It's been a while since I got some real writing done. I've broken that spell today, and done pretty well with Project Three. Which, now that I think about it, I don't know why I said was hush hush. I suppose because I'd not written on it for quite some time, not since an intro section, if you will, and didn't know where it was going next. But, I've named it before. Anatomy of Darkness. It's not at all the one I thought I'd work on today, either, but some things popped into my head ...
